Bethany Housing Committee To Discuss Affordable Housing Strategy, Possible Nonprofit

BETHANY, CT — The Bethany Housing Advisory Committee will discuss its future role and possible approaches to affordable housing in town during a special meeting Thursday, Sept. 10.

Among the options on the agenda are helping the Planning and Zoning Commission develop a plan for what affordable housing could look like in Bethany, forming a nonprofit organization that could seek outside funding for housing development and holding a community information session about housing conditions in Connecticut and the region.

Affordable Housing Planning On Agenda

The committee is scheduled to review its key findings to date before discussing what role it should play going forward.

One possibility is assisting the Planning and Zoning Commission with a plan defining affordable housing in Bethany as an alternative to developers seeking approval under Connecticut's 8-30g affordable housing law.

Members will also consider whether a nonprofit organization should be established to pursue outside funding for housing development in Bethany.

Another potential step is an informational session for residents addressing what the agenda describes as the current housing environment in the state and region.

Members will also consider approval of minutes from the Housing Advisory Committee's Aug. 3 meeting.

The special meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Selectmen's Conference Room at Bethany Town Hall. A remote option will also be available.
