Take it to Town Hall. Renters may also file complaints if an apartment has unsafe and unhealthy and uncorrected housing conditions that violate the building code, and/or if a landlord has taken retaliatory actions against a tenant.

BRANFORD, CT — In a message to renters in the community, the town posted information about the Fair Rent Commission.

The Commission is a volunteer municipal board, mandated by Connecticut law, that reviews complaints from renters and landlords about rent charges and can investigate, hold hearings, and make legally enforceable decisions about whether a rent amount or increase is excessive or “unconscionable.”

When warranted, the Commission can phase in, delay, or even reduce rent increases, especially when housing is unsafe or unhealthy, or if the proposed rent is not justified based on local conditions and market comparisons. It can also order the landlord to cease retaliatory actions.
