State Rep. Comey, State Sen. Cohen Secure $850K State Bonding to Wrap Short Beach Traffic-Calming Work

BRANFORD, CT — State Representative Robin Comey (D-Branford) and State Senator Christine Cohen (D-Branford) announced Wednesday that Gov. Ned Lamont approved $850,000 in additional bonding to complete the long-awaited Short Beach traffic calming project, ensuring the initiative — first funded in 2022 — will move to completion.

The project, designed to make Short Beach’s streets safer for families, cyclists, and pedestrians, has received state support to fund improvements including crosswalks, sidewalks, lighting, curbs, signage, and landscaping on Route 142 through the center of Short Beach from Double Beach Road to the East Haven town line at the Farm River.

The proposal is poised to get final design approvals and DOT permits, a news release from Comey noted.

Comey worked with residents, the town, and Lamont, ultimately reaching a solution that expanded the project's scope and required additional funding to complete.

"Short Beach is one of the most beloved corners of our district, and its residents have been patient while this project has grown and evolved," Comey said.

"I went to the Governor because our neighbors deserve a finished project, not a half-built one. I’m grateful he heard us and stepped up with the funding to get this across the finish line," the Branford Democrat said.

Comey, who represents the 102nd District, which includes Branford, said she'll "continue to keep Short Beach residents updated as the project progresses.

"Short Beach is quintessential Branford, and these improvements to pedestrian and motorist safety are long overdue," Cohen said. "With this state funding, we will finally get this critical project across the finish line, ensuring safety and connectivity for residents and visitors alike."

Branford First Selectman Josh Brooks said he was grateful for the needed additional funding.

"These improvements are vital to making this area safer for all our residents and visitors," he said, adding his thanks to Comey, Cohen, and Lamont.
