4-Year-Old Girl Struck, Critically Injured By Bridgeport Police Car, Department Says

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 4-year-old girl was taken to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition Wednesday night after she was struck by a Bridgeport police car responding to a call, according to police.

The 4-year-old was taken by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital with serious injuries. She was most recently listed in critical but stable condition. She lives with her family on Hanover Street, where the collision occurred.

Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter visited the girl at Bridgeport Hospital.

"I am praying for the child's full recovery," Porter said. "The department's thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. There will be a fully transparent, independent investigation."

The crash occurred about 9:36 p.m., and the officer driving the police car was responding to a report of a mob attacking a female at nearby Went Field Park on the West Side.

By the time other officers arrived at the park, the crowd had dispersed, and police did not locate the person who was reportedly attacked.

The Bridgeport Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene on Hanover Street. The regional Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit also responded to conduct an independent investigation.
