Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Names 1st-Ever Chinese Goral Born In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has named its first Chinese goral Qilin after inviting the public to help choose a name for the animal, which was born July 21 during a summer storm.

Qilin, pronounced CHEE-lin, refers to a mythical creature in Chinese culture associated with good fortune, prosperity and peace. It is sometimes called the “Chinese unicorn.”

The goral was born to Madeline and King without assistance from zoo staff. He was on his feet and following his mother within minutes of his birth, according to the zoo.

“Qilin certainly made a splash when he arrived during that summer storm, and it has been wonderful to see the community rally around him ever since,” said Dr. Jim Wharton, CEO of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, in a statement. “This was really a special first for Beardsley, and now he has a name chosen by visitors and friends of the Zoo who have been following his story.”

At the time of Qilin’s birth, 26 Chinese gorals were living at eight institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, according to the zoo. Qilin was the fourth Chinese goral born at an AZA-accredited zoo in 2026.

Qilin, Madeline and King continue to do well under the care of the zoo’s animal care team. Visitors may be able to see Qilin exploring his habitat with his mother.
