Back To School: Canton PD Reminds Motorists Of School Bus Safety

CANTON, CT — With Canton students returning to school Thursday, police are reminding motorists to slow down, watch for children, and stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.

The Canton Police Department issued the back-to-school safety reminder as students began the new school year Thursday, Aug. 27, bringing more buses and pedestrian activity to local roads and neighborhoods.

Police emphasized that drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.

The fine for a first offense of passing a standing school bus in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 14-279(a) is $475, according to Canton police.

Drivers should also obey posted speed limits, particularly in school zones, and watch for children walking, riding bicycles, crossing streets or waiting at bus stops.

Police are also urging motorists to put down their phones and avoid other distractions while driving.

With traffic and delays expected to increase during the first few weeks of school, motorists should allow additional travel time rather than rushing, police said.

Parents and caregivers are also being encouraged to review basic safety practices with children, including remaining aware of their surroundings, crossing streets safely, and following instructions from bus drivers, crossing guards, teachers, and other school employees.
