Canton Offering Free Suicide Prevention Training For Teens, Adults

The Canton Public Library and the Farmington Valley Health District will offer free QPR suicide prevention training next week.

CANTON, CT — The Canton Public Library will host two free suicide prevention training sessions next week aimed at teaching teens and adults how to recognize warning signs and connect someone experiencing a crisis with help.

The library and Farmington Valley Health District are offering Question, Persuade and Refer, or QPR, training as part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Separate sessions will be held for teenagers and adults:

  • Teens ages 14-18: Monday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 p.m.
  • Adults: Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Both sessions will be held at Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave.

The 90-minute training focuses on three steps — question, persuade, and refer — intended to help participants recognize warning signs of a suicide crisis, offer support, and connect someone with appropriate help.

Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of training.

The workshops are provided free of charge by the Farmington Valley Health District and Canton Public Library, but advance registration is required.
