Injured Turtle With Fishhook In Mouth Saved By Canton Nature Center

CANTON, CT — A painted turtle found with a fishing hook deeply embedded in its mouth has been returned to the wild after undergoing surgery and rehabilitation, according to the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton.

The nature center recently shared the turtle's story as part of a "Freedom Friday" post, along with video of its release.

Staff members at the center's Wildlife Clinic initially attempted to help the turtle after it was brought in with the hook lodged in its mouth.

The hook, however, was too deeply embedded to be easily removed, according to the center.

The turtle was then taken to a veterinarian, where X-rays were performed to determine the extent of the problem.

The animal was placed under anesthesia, and the hook was successfully removed through surgery, according to the nature center.

After the procedure, the painted turtle returned to the Wildlife Clinic, where it underwent rehabilitation until staff determined it was ready to return to its natural habitat.

"This could have turned out much worse," the nature center said.

The center used the turtle's ordeal to remind people that discarded fishing equipment and other debris can pose serious risks to wildlife.

"PLEASE when out in nature — whether it be fishing, hunting or even hiking or having a picnic, PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF!" the center said. "Our wildlife will thank you."

Painted turtles, whose scientific name is Chrysemys picta, are found in freshwater habitats such as ponds, marshes, and slow-moving waterways.
