2026 Mayor’s Merit Award Recipients Set To Be Honored At Annual Dinner, Fall Fest Kickoff

EAST HAVEN, CT — The community is preparing to celebrate five individuals and a longtime local business whose service, dedication, and commitment to the community have earned them the town’s 2026 Mayor’s Merit Awards.

The community is preparing to celebrate five whose service, dedication, and commitment to the community have earned them a 2026 Mayor’s Merit Award.

Mayor Joseph A. Carfora announced this year’s recipients following a review of numerous nominations submitted by community members.

The Merit Award Committee, made up of local residents, carefully considered the nominations and selected honorees whose contributions have made a meaningful and lasting impact on East Haven.

This year’s recipients are:

• Vincent Borzillo and Joseph Santino in the Residents/Senior Resident category;
• Goody’s Hardware in the Community Business category;
• Jayla Santiago as the Student recipient;
• School Resource Officer Nicole Burrell in the Public Safety category.

The awards recognize exceptional public service, leadership, community involvement, selflessness, and achievement.

“The Mayor’s Merit Awards provide a wonderful opportunity to recognize people who give so much of themselves and make a lasting difference in the lives of others,” Carfora said. “Reading the nominations and learning how this year’s recipients have touched so many lives is a true reminder of what makes East Haven such a special community.”

Carfora also thanked everyone who submitted nominations, emphasizing that the strong response reflects the many residents, businesses, and community members who continue to step forward to help others.

The honorees will be celebrated at the Mayor’s Merit Award Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Amarante’s. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite or in person at the Mayor’s Office.

The annual dinner traditionally serves as the official kickoff to East Haven’s Fall Festival weekend. This year’s festival will include a full schedule of activities and entertainment, including live music, the annual 5K Road Race, the Chamber Business Expo, and the annual Car Show on Sunday.
