EAST HAVEN, CT — East Haven's Zoning Board of Appeals hears variance requests and an appeal of a zoning enforcement decision, and the Civil Service Commission takes up exams for fire marshal, police officer and firefighter-paramedic positions.

Here are five things to know about life around East Haven this week:

1. Zoning Appeals Board Hears Variances, Main Street Appeal
When: Thursday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m.
Where: East Haven Senior Center, 91 Taylor Ave.
What to know: The Zoning Board of Appeals will hear requests for a front porch at 251 Hemingway Ave., a freestanding sign larger than allowed in a residential zone at 317 Foxon Road, a house expansion at 52 Brown Road and an attached garage at 943 North High St., according to the amended notice. It will also hear Carmine LLC's appeal of a zoning enforcement officer's decision at 448 Main St. and coastal site plan reviews, including a second story at 126 Morgan Ave.

2. Civil Service Commission Reviews Fire Marshal, Police Exams
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
Where: Town Hall, 250 Main St.
What to know: The commission's agenda lists the fire marshal and deputy fire marshal positions, a Board of Education secretary, a police officer, a chief examiner and a Public Works mechanic, plus a new item for firefighter-paramedic, according to the agenda.
