Former Enfield School Could Become 39 Apartments

ENFIELD, CT — A former Enfield elementary school that has sat vacant for nearly a decade could be converted into 39 apartments for residents 55 and older.

NHR LLC has submitted plans to redevelop the former Nathan Hale Elementary School at 5 Taylor Road. The proposal is scheduled to go before the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday night.

The developer is seeking approval to convert the existing school rather than demolish it. Architectural plans filed with the town show 39 apartments inside the building.

A separate application asks the commission to rezone the property from Residential-33 to a Special Design District. Both applications are included in the commission’s Sept. 24 meeting files.

The 46,295-square-foot school sits on a 6.17-acre parcel in the Scitico section of town. It closed in 2017 and has remained vacant since then.

Enfield first sought proposals to reuse the property in 2017. In a development request, the town said it wanted a project that would complement the surrounding neighborhood and help revitalize the area.

The town issued another request for redevelopment proposals in 2024.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Town Hall. Approval of the redevelopment is still pending.
