New Date Set For Enfield Memorial Rededication

The ceremony is now scheduled for November, following the postponement of the October event.

ENFIELD, CT — The rededication of the Captain Thomas Abbey Memorial has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m., the Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced.

The ceremony was previously scheduled for Oct. 17. The chapter's new announcement did not give a reason for the postponement.

The event will celebrate the completion of the memorial's preservation project and honor Abbey's service and Enfield's Revolutionary history, according to the chapter. The memorial stands in front of Enfield Congregational Church at 1295 Enfield St.

As Patch previously reported, the chapter partnered with Enfield-based Rogers Memorial Studio on the restoration as part of Enfield's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

The memorial was dedicated Nov. 4, 1916. The rescheduled ceremony will take place just over 110 years after that dedication.

According to the Enfield Historical Society's account of local history, tradition holds that Abbey interrupted a sermon on April 20, 1775, by beating his drum as he marched around the meetinghouse after news of the war reached town. Seventy-four volunteers led by Major Nathaniel Terry marched for Boston the next day.

The chapter invited the community to attend and said additional ceremony details will be shared closer to Nov. 14.
