Former Sacred Heart University Basketball Player Killed In Shooting In Wisconsin: Police

FAIRFIELD, CT — A 27-year-old former Sacred Heart University basketball player was killed over the weekend in a shooting in Racine, Wisconsin, according to authorities.

Koreem Ozier was shot just before 9 p.m. Sunday night in the area of 12th Street and South Memorial Drive in Racine, where he lived.

Officers found Ozier suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was taken to Ascension Hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss," said Racine Police Department Sgt. Alicia Mitchell in a statement.

Preliminary information indicated Ozier had been involved in an altercation with an unknown man and was shot in the chest during the confrontation, according to police. Investigators initially described the shooting as an isolated incident.

During the investigation, police developed information that led them to identify a vehicle and individuals of interest.

Justin Millard was arrested Monday, and charges were referred to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office for aiding a felon, police said.

Collin Wallace was also arrested Monday, and charges were referred to the district attorney’s office for first-degree intentional homicide, according to police.

Police had previously said a 23-year-old man identified as a person of interest was interviewed and arrested on related charges. At the time of that update, investigators said they were still searching for a person believed to have been the shooter.

A Communications major, Ozier was a standout player for the Sacred Heart men's basketball team during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

"The Sacred Heart men’s basketball family mourns the loss of former Pioneer Kareem Ozier," the team wrote on Facebook. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew and loved him."
