Reported Assault In Fairfield Was Not A Stabbing, Police Say

FAIRFIELD, CT — An incident over the weekend that was characterized as a stabbing was not a stabbing, according to Fairfield police, but was an assault during which a victim sustained a laceration from yard equipment.

Reports circulated on social media that erroneously referred to the incident as a stabbing, which Fairfield police clarified on Tuesday.

"The following matter was not initially publicized because there was no significant or prolonged police presence, there was no threat to the public, and it was the type of incident officers routinely respond to," officials wrote on Facebook. "In family violence cases, when there is no broader public safety concern, we try to respect the privacy of those involved due to the sensitive nature of these situations."

According to police, officers responded over the weekend to a report of a physical altercation between two family members.

"During the altercation, Yuri Vahagn Anushyan, 22, punched the other individual in the face," officials wrote. "While the victim also sustained a laceration to the leg from yard equipment, the injury was not the result of Anushyan stabbing him. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment."

Anushyan was arrested on charges of third-degree assault and breach of peace; he was not charged in connection with the victim's laceration.

He was released after posting bond on bail of $2,500, and he is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday.
