THE PROBLEM WITH NETWORKING
(and How Your Experience Can Solve it.)

We’re not in the job market very long before we hear "We need to Network."

The word is introduced without much ceremony as if we are supposed to know what it is and how we do it. The problem is that networking does mean more than one thing. Some networking is exactly what we need to do. And some is useless if not downright harmful --- to our progress and our effectiveness in the job market. Networking can be a problem or opportunity.

Join New York City-based career coach Win Sheffield and SCSC meeting Chair Jim Wills for this fall’s inaugural meeting. We will investigate simple techniques to assist the people we network with to hear what we have to offer, in a way that is attractive
to them, and effective for us. Target topics in this interactive session include:

How to be clear on the kinds of networking you are doing
How to select your best experiences to share
How to make past experiences relevant in new jobs
The five main components of a story
How non-work stories can be relevant
How to use stories in networking and interviews
