As our nation marks 250 years of American independence, the Putnam Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) invites all Greenwich students in grades 5 through 12 to bring history to life in the 2026–2027 American History and Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Contests.
This year’s national contest prompts students to engage deeply with the people and pivotal moments that shaped our founding:
- Grades 5–8 Track: "Announcement of the Declaration of Independence First Public Reading" — Students step back in time to July 1776 to examine the immediate local, emotional, and practical impact of hearing the historic reading for the very first time.
- Grades 9–12 Track: "Patriots of the American Revolution" — Students research and profile a figure—whether a famous founder or an unsung hero—who helped shape the nation between 1773 and 1783.
- Students also have the option to enter the Video Contest by submitting a 3-minute video exploring these same historical topics.
The contest is open to all students residing in or attending school in Greenwich, including public, private, parochial, and home-school programs. Educators are encouraged to offer extra credit for participation to inspire student entries without adding to their lesson planning during the busy back-to-school season.
Submission Deadline & Awards:
Entries must be submitted to the local chapter by November 1, 2026. Chapter-level winners will receive Bronze Medals and official certificates. Winning essays will advance through state and divisional rounds, competing for national recognition and monetary awards.
