Community Mourns Death Of Former 'Youth Of The Year,' Beloved Member Of Boys & Girls Club Of Greenwich Family

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich community is mourning the death of Scott Karsen, a lifelong town resident and a beloved member of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich family. He was 55.

Karsen was named BGCG "Youth of the Year" in 1990, and later returned to work at the club as a swim instructor.

"We are deeply saddened by Scott’s passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched," the club said in a statement. "We are especially grateful that Scott’s family has designated Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich to receive memorial contributions in his memory, a meaningful tribute to his lifelong connection to the Club."

Karsen graduated from Greenwich High School and attended Westfield State College, according to an obituary posted by the club on Facebook.

He founded Scott Karsen Aquatics to teach children how to swim.

"Teaching children how to swim was far more than a profession to Scott. Helping young swimmers gain confidence, feel safe in the water, and discover the joy of swimming was deeply meaningful to him and brought him enormous happiness," his obituary said. "He treasured the relationships he built with the children and families he taught throughout the years."

Karsen's life was "rooted in family, community, and the work that gave him such a strong sense of purpose," his obituary continued.

"Scott will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and the many Greenwich families whose lives he touched."

Family and friends can pay their respects to Karsen on Aug. 13 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Castiglione Funeral Home, 544 Old Post Road #3, in Greenwich.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery on North Street in Greenwich.
