Greenwich To Mark 25th Anniversary Of 9/11 With Cos Cob Park Remembrance Ceremony

GREENWICH, CT — The community is invited to gather at Cos Cob Park on Friday, Sept. 11 for a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The remembrance ceremony is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and will honor the victims of the attacks.

The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. with a cannon salute and the ringing of a bell, marking the time the North Tower of the World Trade Center was struck.

First Selectman Fred Camillo will offer welcoming remarks, followed by reflections from former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Turner and resident Karen Fassuliotis.

The service will include a reading of the names of the 32 Greenwich victims, prayers, musical tributes, the laying of wreaths and a ceremonial American flag.

The combined honor guards of the Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Fire Department and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service will present the colors.

Following the ceremony, the honor guard and bagpipers will lead a procession past the waterside pavilion to the Sept. 11 Memorial. Flowers will be available for attendees to place at the base of the memorial, and visitors may walk the labyrinth for remembrance and reflection.

Bells and cannon salutes will mark significant moments in the timeline of the attacks throughout the morning. The formal ceremony will conclude with a benediction and the retirement of the colors.

The honor guard will remain posted until 10:28 a.m., when the South Tower collapsed. A final bell toll and cannon salute will close the observance.

The American Red Cross will provide water and support.

Seating will be available, but parking at Cos Cob Park is limited.

Additional parking will be available at the Metro-North commuter lots, with a complimentary shuttle operated by TAG traveling to and from the ceremony.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Later in the day, the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company will host a remembrance ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the World Trade Center steel monument at the Glenville Firehouse, located at 266 Glenville Road.
