Police Urge Crosswalk And Pedestrian Safety With School Set To Begin In Greenwich

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is urging the public to be mindful of crosswalk and pedestrian safety as school is set to begin on Friday, Aug. 28.

"Parents and guardians, take a few minutes to talk with your children about safely crossing the street. Encourage them to use designated crosswalks whenever available, stop and look both ways before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway. Remind children to stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones or headphones while walking near traffic," police said in a social media post.

Drivers should expect increased pedestrian activity around school zones, bus stops, neighborhoods and intersections. Drivers are being reminded to slow down, be alert of their surroundings, eliminate distractions, and be prepared to stop for pedestrians.

"Use extra caution during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times, when more children will be walking and biking in our community," police said.

Students should also never assume a driver sees them. Before crossing the road, students should stop, look, listen and mae sure vehicles come to a complete stop.

"As we begin a new school year, patience and attention from everyone on the road can help make the trip to and from school safer for our students," police added.
