Guilford Selectmen Advance Proposed $800,000 Purchase Of 63-Acre Property

GUILFORD, CT — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously last week to bring a proposed $800,000 purchase of approximately 63 acres on Durham Road from Bartlett Land Corporation to a special town meeting.

A specific date was not decided upon, but it could be announced at the next Board of Selectmen meeting on Oct. 5.

The board also voted 5-0 to refer the proposed purchase to the Planning and Zoning Commission for review as required by state law.

Environmental Planner Kevin Magee said the purchase would preserve forest blocks and wildlife habitat, prevent runoff issues affecting Lake Quonnipaug and allow expanded trail networks and recreational opportunities, according to meeting minutes.

The parcel is adjacent to Connecticut Water Company property, the Sportsman’s Club and other properties, with access from the Lake Quonnipaug beach parking lot, meeting minutes note.

Magee said he will apply for open space grants from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection that are expected to offset up to two-thirds of the purchase cost. Appraisals and surveys are underway.

Board members also discussed the risks of future development, existing access roads and the potential to expand recreational facilities.

Selectwoman Susan Renner moved to set the special town meeting, with Selectwoman Sandra Ruoff seconding. Ruoff moved to refer the purchase to Planning and Zoning, with Renner seconding.
