Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Patch had a chance to talk with Kevin Sullivan, Assistant Vice President of Hartford Banking Center Manager.
Patch: How long have you been doing business in town, or how long has your organization been around in the community?
Kevin Sullivan: PeoplesBank has been serving customers across Connecticut and Massachusetts for more than 140 years. Our new Hartford Banking Center expands our long-standing tradition of community banking into the capital region. Although this location is new, our commitment to Hartford is not—we have been supporting local businesses, nonprofits, and community initiatives throughout the area for many years. Opening this banking center allows us to bring our full range of services, local decision‑making, and relationship‑focused banking directly to Hartford residents and businesses.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Kevin Sullivan: I was drawn to community banking because it allows me to help people reach meaningful financial goals. I started in customer service and grew into leadership by focusing on relationships and service.
Patch: What's the most common piece of advice you give to customers?
Kevin Sullivan: The advice I share most often is to think of your financial goals as part of a long-term plan. Whether you’re saving for a home, managing a business, or planning for the future, small, consistent steps make a huge difference. I also encourage customers to reach out before making major financial decisions. Having a trusted banking partner who understands your goals can help you make choices that protect your finances, strengthen your credit, and position you for long-term success. We’re here not just to provide products, but to offer guidance and support every step of the way.

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Kevin Sullivan: The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the impact of the non-profits we support—like Hands on Hartford and United Way—as they provide essential services that strengthen our community. Equally fulfilling is working with and supporting our associates as they grow in their careers, knowing that when our team feels valued and empowered, they deliver the best possible experience to our customers. Whether it’s helping a family buy their first home, supporting a business owner as they secure financing to grow, or giving customers clarity and confidence around their finances, each day brings an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
Patch: How would you say your business distinguishes itself from the others?
Kevin Sullivan: PeoplesBank stands out through our commitment to community, our mutual charter, and our personalized, relationship-focused approach. Because we are not shareholder‑owned, we reinvest earnings directly back into the communities we serve. Decisions are made locally, which means customers receive timely responses and solutions tailored to their needs. We also offer a combination of modern digital banking tools and personalized in‑person support, giving customers the flexibility they expect with the guidance they value. Our century‑long tradition of community engagement and responsible banking truly sets us apart.
