HARTFORD, CT — Hartford HealthCare this week announced a long-term plan to remake the Hartford Hospital campus, outlining nearly $1 billion in investments and new construction through 2035.

The initiative, called “HHC 2035,” centers on a new 14-story patient tower that would include 216 inpatient beds, updated procedure rooms, and expanded prep and recovery areas.

Plans also call for a new Patient Arrival Center on Jefferson Street with parking, dining, gardens and a conference center, along with a two-story lobby connecting the new facilities.

Hartford HealthCare described the effort as a “defining decade” for both the system and the state, emphasizing a shift toward expanded access, modern facilities and new technology.

“This is a defining decade for Connecticut and Hartford HealthCare is leading the way forward,” the organization said in the statement.

The system said the goal is to create a “world-class destination” for care while modernizing aging infrastructure and preparing for future growth.

The plan also emphasizes improving patient experience and making care more “consumer-centric,” including easier access and navigation within the hospital.

The announcement did not outline specific timelines for each phase of construction or whether regulatory approvals are still required.

In addition to physical upgrades, Hartford HealthCare said the initiative will focus on long-term goals such as reducing costs through efficiencies, expanding access to care, supporting workforce development, and promoting health equity.

The system also indicated it will continue evaluating upgrades across its hospitals statewide during the same period, including investments in technology, sustainability and patient experience.

The scope of the project suggests multiple phases of planning, approvals and construction over the next decade.
