Tax season doesn’t have to be stressful. I see so many people each year scrambling for their documents. And I always say, the more prepared you are, the less stressed out you will get when it comes to filing. Because I see the same questions, avoidable mistakes, and missed opportunities, I’ve prepared this document as a checklist to help alleviate concerns before April 15th.

Warner Allred Tax Solutions is located right here in Madison, CT. As a local CPA, I am available to answer questions and help you file. I’m taking appointments at 869 Boston Post Road on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 Enterprise Drive Suite 105 in Shelton, CT. Please contact me to schedule yours by calling 860-322-2830.

1. Start early (even if you’re not ready to file)

Waiting until the last minute is one of the biggest drivers of mistakes, missing forms, and IRS letters. Start a digital or paper folder with everything you’ll need to successfully file. Then you’ll know where to find everything.

Get started now by gathering:

  • W-2s and 1099s (including bank interest, investments, independent contractor work, and retirement distributions)
  • Mortgage interest statements and property taxes
  • Charitable donation records
  • Childcare and education expenses
  • Health insurance forms (1095-A if you used the Marketplace)
  • Last year’s return

2. Know what’s taxable:

Not everything you receive counts as taxable income, and not everything that feels like a deduction actually is.

Have any questions regarding this? Call us today at 860-322-2830.

3. Credits are often more valuable than deductions

Deductions reduce your taxable income — credits reduce your tax bill directly.

Missing a credit can cost hundreds — sometimes thousands. Call us today at 860-322-2830.

4. Are you an independent contractor?

Uber driving, Etsy sales, photography, consulting — it all counts.

Keep records of:

  • Mileage and vehicle expenses
  • Supplies and software
  • Home office expenses, including the size of your office
  • Internet and phone used for business
  • Professional fees and platform fees

Tracking as you go means you only pay tax on net profit, not gross income.

5. Major life changes can change your taxes

Tell your tax professional if you:

  • Gotten married or divorced
  • Had a baby or adopted
  • Bought or sold a home or investment property
  • Changed jobs or started a business
  • Retired or started Social Security
  • Moved states

A five-minute conversation can prevent costly surprises.

6. Avoid the most common mistakes I see

  • Filing with missing forms
  • Typing errors on names, Social Security numbers, or bank info
  • Forgetting estimated tax payments
  • Not reporting cryptocurrency or digital asset transactions
  • Choosing the wrong filing status

Most IRS notices come from simple, avoidable errors.

7. Electronic filing + direct deposit = fastest refunds

E-filed returns with direct deposit are typically processed faster and with fewer issues. Paper filing should be a last resort.

8. If you owe — don’t panic

If your balance due is larger than expected:

  • File on time anyway (penalties for not filing are harsher than not paying).
  • Contact the IRS to set up a payment plan if needed.
  • Adjust your withholding or estimated payments for next year.

The IRS generally prefers communication over silence.
