Old Manchester Museum and Manchester Historical Society to Host Dino’ Shindig Featuring Yale Peabody Museum
MANCHESTER, CT — The Manchester Historical Society is excited to announce a special family-friendly event, the "Dino’ Shindig," taking place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Hosted at the Old Manchester Museum, this event offers a unique opportunity for the community to engage with prehistoric history through expert presentations and hands-on activities.
As a highlight of the ongoing exhibit, "Mathias Spiess’ Tour Book of Manchester: Dinosaurs, Podunks, Colonists," the Dino’ Shindig brings world-class paleontology to the local level. The event is a featured part of the America 250th celebration, honoring Manchester’s deep heritage and its place in the broader American narrative.
The day’s programming features a collaboration with the Yale Peabody Museum, which will present on Manchester’s own dinosaur fossils. Visitors will have the rare chance to:
- View Actual Fossils: See authentic dinosaur fossils discovered at Buckland Hill, including castings of the Anchisaurus.
- Meet the Experts: Talk directly with Yale paleontologists to learn about the creatures that once roamed our region.
- Interactive Learning: Children and aspiring scientists are invited to participate in a simulated dig to uncover dinosaur bones.
- Detailed Models: Explore a specialized model on loan from the Yale Peabody Museum that displays both the skeletal interior and the skin of an Anchisaurus.
The broader Mathias Spiess exhibit, which runs from May through December 2026, celebrates the work of Manchester’s first historian, author, and poet. By connecting prehistoric giants to the colonial era, the Society aims to inspire a new generation of history enthusiasts.
