Eastern Connecticut Trophy Trout Area Among Latest To Be Stocked

WINDHAM, CT — An eastern Connecticut river designated as a state Trophy Trout Area is among the latest to be stocked by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The stocking was done this week along the Shetucket River in Windham, Scotland and Sprague, DEEP officials said.

The Shetucket is one of a half-dozen designated CT Trophy Trout Areas, along with the the Natchaug River, Naugatuck River, Pequonnock River, Pomperaug River and Salmon River.

The waterways receive a high percentage of larger trout (10-to-12 inches long) to "increase angling opportunities," DEEP officials said.

Spring stocking runs from March through May, with, for example, the Salmon River and Shetucket River being stocked within the month of April in 2026.

During the pre-season (March 1 to the second Saturday in April), the areas are generally catch-and-release.
