WILLIMANTIC, CT — This weekend will be a record-breaking one for new students at Eastern Connecticut State University.

More than 1,000 students are set move into residence halls starting with residential student move-ins on Saturday that continue into Sunday. The University's annual "Warrior Welcome" will conclude the activities on Monday, with two special events signaling the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year.

The Warrior Welcome will greet Eastern's largest incoming class on record, consisting of 1,146 first-year students, a 50 percent increase from the year before (760 in the fall of 2025). The Class of 2030 will join an overall student body of 3,850 matriculated students, including 285 transfer students who are also new to Eastern this year.

The class represents 20 U.S. states (the farthest student coming from Turlock, CA, 3,044 miles from Eastern's Willimantic campus) and has an average GPA of 3.3. Top declared majors include health sciences, business administration, psychology, nursing, and criminology. Fifty-four percent are the first in their families to attend college, 172 are student-athletes, 25 are enrolled in the University Honors Program, and the class includes 12 sets of twins.

"We are tremendously excited to welcome our newest students this fall," Eastern President Karim Ismaili said. "They will experience what makes Eastern so distinctive: the rigor and breadth of a public liberal arts education within a vibrant, primarily residential campus community located in the vibrant Town of Windham. Their arrival brings tremendous energy to Eastern, and I cannot wait to see how they learn, grow, and contribute to our community."

Among the 1,146 first-year students, 91 percent (approximately 1,040) will move into residence halls on Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, 116 residential transfer students will move into Occum Hall. Returning residential students will move in the following day, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Convocation

This year's Warrior Welcome marks the return of Convocation, a formal ceremony on Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. in the Geissler Gymnasium. Students will be addressed by President Karim Ismaili and greeted by faculty in commemoration of beginning their Eastern journey.

During the second annual Light the Way ceremony, the new students will gather for an evening assembly in Webb Lawn, illuminated by lanterns, before closing with a light show and dance party.

"Convocation and Light the Way create two meaningful moments for our newest students as they begin their Eastern journey," Ismaili said. "Convocation connects them to our academic mission and to the faculty who will teach, challenge, and support them, while Light the Way celebrates the sense of community and belonging that is such an important part of the Eastern experience. Together, these traditions remind our students that from their very first days here, they are part of something larger than themselves."
