This Halloween, come discover the fascinating—and sometimes surprising—history hiding in plain sight in South Meriden! Join local historian Justin Piccirillo at 1:00 p.m. at the Meriden Public Library for an entertaining journey through one of Meriden’s most historic neighborhoods. We’ll explore the story of Hanover Pond, from its industrial beginnings and ice harvesting to the days when Hanover Park was a bustling destination for entertainment and recreation; visit the remarkable Red Bridge, whose history stretches back to the nineteenth century; and uncover the story of Hanover School and the generations of children who passed through its doors. We’ll follow the path of the old Meriden, Waterbury & Connecticut River Railroad, which once carried passengers and freight through this landscape, and uncover some lesser-known tales of Boy Scout Island, the mysterious Toboggan Bridge, Oregon Dam, and the old industrial sites along the Quinnipiac River, not to mention tales about a colonial mill as well. Along the way, expect forgotten photographs, colorful characters, unusual stories, and a few historical surprises—including some tales that may be just spooky enough for Halloween! Whether you grew up in South Meriden, live there today, or have simply wondered what those trails, bridges, ponds, and old ruins were all about, this is an opportunity to see a familiar part of Meriden in an entirely new way.
