Special Meeting Called For License Plate Cameras In Milford

MILFORD, CT — A special public forum will be held on the use of surveillance cameras in Milford next week.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Parson's Auditorium at 70 W. River St.

Topics to be covered at the meeting include license plate reader cameras, speed cameras and red light cameras.,

The meeting will allow the public to "learn more about those programs and ask questions," according to a meeting announcement.

The news comes after residents spoke out at a recent Board of Aldermen meeting opposing the use of cameras due to privacy concerns.

Police have argued that the cameras serve a vital public safety function, reducing speeding and providing evidence in criminal cases.

Mayor Richard Smith said in a video posted to Facebook that he looks forward to having "a thoughtful discussion on these very important issues."

Smith said there needs to be an opportunity for city officials to answer the questions that have been raised about the camera program.

Smith also said he will ask the Board of Aldermen chair to hold a special meeting Aug. 27.
