Monroe Cemetery Opening After Dark For Lantern-Lit History Walk

MONROE, CT — East Village Cemetery will open its gates after dark in October for its fifth annual Lantern Light History Walk.

This year's theme, “250 Years of American Spirits,” will explore American history through the stories of people buried at the cemetery, with tales spanning from the 1700s through the 1970s.

Organizers say the walk isn't intended to be a haunted attraction, promising “no scary monsters or ghouls jumping out at you.” Instead, visitors can expect stories and cemetery lore while walking the grounds by lantern light, along with some “new, old, ancient or superstitious” surprises.

Walks will be offered at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

Reservations are required. A $10 donation is requested, with proceeds going toward maintaining and preserving the cemetery.

Organizers noted that the cemetery grounds are not handicap accessible because of uneven terrain and gradual hills. The walk also may not be suitable for younger children because of some of the subject matter presented.
