New Business Proposed For Prominent Site In Monroe

MONROE, CT — A proposal to convert the former Rite Aid building on Monroe Turnpike into a Town Fair Tire store is moving through the town approval process.

The Monroe Planning and Zoning Commission continued a public hearing May 7 on an application seeking a special exception permit for the property at 508 Monroe Turnpike. The proposal would convert the vacant pharmacy building into an automobile service shop and retail store.

According to meeting minutes, representatives for the project presented revised plans addressing concerns about noise from overhead garage doors facing nearby neighborhoods. Officials said the proposed business would include tire sales, wheel balancing and alignments, but no oil changes or vehicle repair work.

Some residents raised concerns about potential impacts on nearby wetlands, noise and property values, while others voiced support for reusing the vacant commercial building and generating additional tax revenue.

The proposal is also scheduled for review by Monroe’s Architectural Review Board.
