NEW HAVEN, CT — Whether you're picking up burgers for the grill, making one last home improvement run or grabbing coffee before enjoying the unofficial final weekend of summer, Labor Day is one of those holidays when hours can look a little different.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Many stores, pharmacies and restaurants are expected to remain open, while government offices, schools, libraries and other public services will be closed.
Individual locations may adjust their Labor Day hours, and some holiday schedules may not be finalized until closer to Sept. 7. It's always a good idea to check with the business directly before heading out.

New Haven City Offices And Public Services
The City of New Haven lists Labor Day among its observed holidays for 2026, meaning City Hall and most municipal offices are expected to be closed Monday, Sept. 7. Residents who need to take care of city business can visit the City of New Haven website before the holiday or wait until offices reopen.
The city had not posted a Labor Day-specific trash and recycling notice as of Aug. 4. Residents should check New Haven's trash and recycling page closer to the holiday for any collection changes.

The residential waste drop-off area at 260 Middletown Ave. normally operates Monday through Saturday, but residents should confirm its holiday schedule before visiting.
Schools And Libraries
New Haven Public Schools will be closed for Labor Day. The district's 2026-27 calendar lists Monday, Sept. 7, as a holiday, one week after the first day of school on Aug. 31.
The New Haven Free Public Library will also close for Labor Day. Its official holiday schedule lists closures on both Saturday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 7, so families planning a weekend library visit should go earlier in the week. Grocery stores are generally among the businesses expected to remain open on Labor Day, although some locations may use reduced hours.
