Boats Catch Fire At Marina In New London

Two boats caught fire and another two sustained heavy damage in the blaze, fire officials said.

NEW LONDON, CT — Two boats caught fire at a New London marina on Thursday morning, according to fire officials.

The incident occurred at Burr's Marina at 5:05 a.m. and shut down Pequot Avenue in both directions.

The affected boats were moored about 300 feet down the marina's main pier. Two boats caught fire and another two were heavily damaged by radiant heat. The main pier was also damaged as a result of this fire.

Firefighters used multiple hose lines from the pier to extinguish the blaze. Fire boats from neighboring departments were used to help the effort.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews had just finished extinguishing a blaze at a multi-family home when the boat fire broke out before 5 a.m.

The boat fire marks "the latest in what has been an exceptionally busy 24-hour period for the New London Fire Department, during which firefighters have responded to multiple significant emergencies throughout the city," according to a statement.

"I cannot express enough appreciation for the dedication and professionalism our firefighters have demonstrated over the past 24 hours," Fire Chief Vernon Skau said in a statement. "Their training, teamwork, and commitment to protecting our city were on full display during this incident. The City of New London is truly fortunate to have the outstanding men and women who serve in this department."
