New Milford Conservation Commission Backs Proposed Ban On Rodenticides At Town Properties

NEW MILFORD, CT — The Conservation Commission agreed Aug. 19 to support a proposed ban on rodenticides at municipal properties and discussed a request to investigate possible zoning violations at 326 Litchfield Road.

Representatives of the New Milford Bee City Committee presented the rodenticide proposal to the commission as part of an effort to bring a similar policy before the Town Council.

Patricia L. Crispo and Cassie McKenna of the Bee City Committee updated commission members on efforts by other towns to address rodenticide use. They sought the Conservation Commission's support for banning the products on all municipal properties.

The commission decided that the Bee City Committee representatives would present their proposal to the Town Council and that the Conservation Commission would support advancing it.

Possible Litchfield Road zoning violations raised

Commission member Michael Bird also reported that the Northville Residents Association had asked the Conservation Commission to investigate possible zoning violations at 326 Litchfield Road.

Chairperson Lynn Webster said any response from the Conservation Commission would depend on action, if any, taken by the Zoning Commission.

Signage sought for Hulton Meadows

Commission member Howard Russock raised concerns about the need for signs directing residents to access and parking for Hulton Meadows.

Webster said she would inform the Parks and Recreation Department about the issue. No vote was recorded.

Global warming presentation preparations complete

The commission also reviewed preparations for a presentation on global warming at the New Milford Public Library. Members determined that all necessary preparations had been completed as of the Aug. 19 meeting.

Webster also asked commission members to submit material for the commission's annual report to Bird, who will prepare the report.

The commission reported that its Land Acquisition Reserve Fund had an opening balance of $107,029 in June. The fund earned $133.79 in interest, bringing its June closing balance to $107,162.79.

Commission members Michael Bird, Howard Russock, Webster and Helen "Lennie" Lillis attended the meeting. Andrew McPhee was absent.

Members voted 4-0 to approve the July 1 meeting minutes and cancellation notices for the July 15 and Aug. 5 meetings. The Aug. 19 meeting began at 7 p.m. and adjourned by unanimous consent at 7:50 p.m.
