Box Truck Strikes Railroad Bridge In Newtown: Police

Police said the driver was unfamiliar with the area and was unaware of the bridge's height restriction.

NEWTOWN, CT — A box truck struck a railroad bridge on Botsford Hill Road in Newtown after the driver was unaware of the bridge's height restriction, according to police.

Police said the crash occurred June 23 near Swamp Road when the westbound box truck hit the overhead bridge structure. The driver told officers she was unfamiliar with the area and did not realize the truck exceeded the bridge's height restriction.

The truck sustained minor damage, and police said there was no observable damage to the bridge. The driver continued making scheduled deliveries before reporting the crash the following day.

Housatonic Railroad was contacted to inspect the bridge, and the driver received a verbal warning for a traffic violation, according to police.
