Cat Rescued From Newtown House Fire, Flames Contained

NEWTOWN, CT — Firefighters rescued a cat and prevented a garage fire from spreading extensively into a Newtown home Wednesday afternoon, according to Botsford Fire Rescue.

All Newtown fire companies were dispatched to the structure fire around 12:20 p.m., Botsford Fire Rescue said. Newtown police arrived first and reported a working fire in the garage.

All occupants had escaped the home, but two cats were initially unaccounted for, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the garage and minimize damage to the home's living areas, officials said.

One of the missing indoor cats was found alive by firefighters and brought to safety. The second is an indoor-outdoor cat that officials said was believed to be safe and expected to return home.

No firefighters were injured.

The fire was declared under control at 12:55 p.m., about 35 minutes after crews were dispatched.

The Newtown Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
