Here’s How Newtown Voted On The Revised Budget Referendum

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown voters approved revised town and school budget proposals during Tuesday’s referendum, according to results released by election officials.

The revised town budget passed by a vote of 1,938 to 1,891, according to the tally released Tuesday night.

Voters also approved the revised Board of Education budget proposal, with 1,938 votes in favor and 1,897 opposed, officials said.

The HVAC project question passed 2,375 to 1,447, according to the results.

The referendum followed an earlier vote this month in which residents rejected both the town and school budgets.

The revised proposal includes a $50,982,037 town budget and a $95,561,919 school budget, for a combined $146,543,956 spending plan — a 3.48 percent increase over the current budget.

The updated proposal includes about $471,000 in cuts to the town budget and $400,000 in reductions to the school budget following a series of changes approved by the Legislative Council earlier this month.

According to the tally sheet, 3,863 ballots were cast out of 18,383 eligible voters, a 21% turnout.
