Speed Cameras Coming To I-84 Work Zone In Newtown

NEWTOWN, CT — Drivers traveling on Interstate 84 through Newtown will soon encounter automated speed cameras that issue warnings and fines to motorists speeding through active work zones.

Automated Work Zone Speed Control equipment is expected to begin operating along I-84 in Newtown during the week of Sept. 6 and remain in use for approximately two weeks, according to a notice shared by Newtown police.

The equipment is part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation's “Know the Zone” program, which uses cameras to identify vehicles traveling 10 mph or more above the posted speed limit in active highway work zones.

Under the program, a first offense results in a written warning. A subsequent violation within one year carries a $75 fine. Drivers traveling 85 mph or faster can receive a $75 fine even for a first offense.

Cameras are only active when workers are present, and signs are posted ahead of areas where the systems are operating. A warning or citation is mailed to the vehicle's registered owner after a potential violation is reviewed.

The Newtown deployment schedule could change because of weather or other conditions, police said.
