Weapons Detection System To Debut At Newtown High Football Game

NEWTOWN, CT — Spectators attending Newtown High School's football game Thursday will be required to pass through a new weapons detection system ahead of its use during the school day.

Newtown police announced Wednesday that the high school will deploy its new CEIA weapons detection system at Thursday's football game as part of a phased rollout.

Everyone attending the game in person will be required to pass through the system before entering, according to police.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., and the detection equipment will be operated by school personnel and security staff.

Police compared the system to weapons detection equipment used at concert venues, Broadway shows and major sporting events.

Thursday's use is a precursor to deploying the technology at the school, police said, although the announcement did not specify when regular school-day use will begin.

School officials asked spectators for patience and cooperation as staff begin using the new equipment. Questions about the system are being directed to Newtown High School.
