5 Super Athletes With Ties To North Haven

Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the North Haven area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.

Patch is celebrating five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. This list is just a snapshot, with countless other athletes helping shape the rich sports culture in our area.

1. Tiffany Weimer (Soccer)

Tiffany Weimer set a North Haven High School record with 109 goals before becoming one of the most accomplished soccer players in Penn State history. She was a three-time All-American, scored 91 goals in 97 games for the Nittany Lions and went on to play professionally for 12 years, including winning an NWSL championship with the Portland Thorns in 2013. The Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame inducted Weimer in 2025.

2. Giovanni Calderon (Soccer)

Giovanni Calderon starred at North Haven High School before playing college soccer at Navy and Cal State Fullerton. In 2023, he became the first Cal State Fullerton player to win Big West Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team All-Big West honors. He also represented Puerto Rico internationally and became the first player offered a USL Academy contract by Hartford Athletic, according to Hartford Athletic.

3. Joshua Calderon (Soccer)

Joshua Calderon followed his North Haven upbringing with a four-year career at Iona, where he made 59 appearances as a defender. He was named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team as a freshman and the All-MAAC Academic Team twice, while also representing Puerto Rico at the international level. Iona Athletics lists North Haven as his hometown and credits him with helping the Gaels record seven shutouts during his freshman season.

4. Jennie Setaro (Ice Hockey)

North Haven's Jennie Setaro played collegiate hockey at Northeastern, appearing in 48 games during the 1998-99 season as a defenseman. She was part of the North Haven High School Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2022 and later became a licensed professional counselor specializing in sports performance. Northeastern's roster lists Setaro as a North Haven native and member of the Huskies' women's hockey team.

5. Marian Kulick Rockwell (Basketball)

Marian Kulick Rockwell was a standout athlete at North Haven High School and was inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022. She is among the women recognized in the school's long-running Hall of Fame, which has honored athletes from multiple generations and sports. North Haven Athletics lists Rockwell among its Hall of Fame athlete inductees.
