North Haven Student Receives Awards At Statewide Competition
The student recently received awards at the statewide Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair.
NORTH HAVEN, CT — Pierson Clark, a North Haven resident and eighth-grade student at Slate School, recently received awards at the statewide Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair.
Clark won second place in Life Sciences Awards and third place in the Pfizer Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Awards. The awards included monetary prizes, trophies, and medals.
The CT Science & Engineering Fair convenes hundreds of middle and high school students from throughout the state each year, and students present their projects to judges and industry sponsors.

His research project, "A Microbiology Study of Ancient and Modern Flours: Comparing Microbial and Chemical Changes in Leavening Systems," involved months of experimentation and analysis, including 18 different flour mixtures sampled over 10 days, 164 petri dishes, dozens of CO₂ captures using balloons, and countless pH strip tests, according to a news release.
“At Slate School, our students are always engaged in curiosity-driven learning throughout our interdisciplinary curriculum,” said Jennifer Staple-Clark, Founder and Executive Director of Slate School. “The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair offers students an incredible opportunity to delve into their interests through experimental design, share their findings with experts in the field, and learn from peers and experts at the Fair.”

The CT Science & Engineering Fair convenes hundreds of Grades 7-12 students from throughout the state each year. It is a charter member of the national International Science and Engineering Fair.
According to the CT Science & Engineering Fair (CSEF), “Over one hundred school fairs, one regional fair, and two city-wide fairs feed the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair. More than 12,000 students in Connecticut and several bordering New York state towns compete for the 600 spaces at CSEF.”
A select number of those participating in CSEF are named finalists, and a small percentage of those students receive honors and awards.
