Vehicle Strikes Fire Hydrant, Closes Road In North Haven: Police

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A road is closed after a vehicle struck a fire hydrant in North Haven, according to police.

The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. in the area of Elm Street and Stoddard Avenue, and caused a “significant” amount of water to flow into the roadway, according to police.

“The roadway is currently unsafe and should be avoided,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “Please use an alternate route and avoid the area until crews can make the necessary repairs and the roadway is safe.”

Water flowed from the damaged fire hydrant for about an hour until Regional Water Authority crews arrived and were able to secure the water flow, according to the North Haven Fire Department.

The fire department is advising residents in the area to be aware that water service may be disrupted throughout the day while repairs are completed.

“Discolored or ‘brown’ water has also been reported in neighborhoods throughout the center of town and surrounding areas as a result of the disruption to the water system,” according to the fire department. “Water clarity should gradually improve throughout the day; however, it may take some time for the system to fully clear.”
