Skimming Devices Found At Several Norwalk Businesses: Police

NORWALK, CT — Skimming devices have recently been found at several businesses in Norwalk, according to the Norwalk Police Department.

In a Facebook post Thursday evening, police said the devices are illegally installed on card readers, ATMs and gas pumps to steal debit and credit card information.

Police advised residents to use extra caution when making purchases.

The department also provided the following safety tips for residents:

• Inspect card readers before inserting your card — look for loose parts, unusual attachments, or damaged keypads.
• Whenever possible, use tap-to-pay or mobile payment instead of inserting your card.
• Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
• Regularly monitor your bank and credit card accounts for unauthorized charges.
• If something looks off, notify the business immediately and do not use that machine.

"If you believe your information may have been compromised, contact your bank right away and report suspicious activity to the Norwalk Police Department," police wrote on Facebook. "Please share this message to help protect friends, family and neighbors from falling victim to fraud."

The appearance of credit card skimming devices isn't new, as there was a rash of reported cases across the state, primarily in 2024, though it's been quieter for the past year.

Here are some of the local reported cases in 2024 across Connecticut:

• A credit card skimming incident was reported at the Groton Big Y.
• A card skimmer was discovered at NSA Supermarket in New London
• Credit card skimmers were found at Big Y grocery stores in Milford and Stratford, WTNH News-8 reported back in 2024.
• A credit card skimmer was found at the 7-Eleven in Montville
• A credit card skimmer was discovered at a Norwich Dollar General.
• A credit card skimming device was placed on self-checkout registers in several Walmart stores, including East Windsor and Brooklyn.
• A local Dollar General store in Berlin was found to have a "skimming" device.
• Cromwell police alerted the public about a skimming incident at Walmart.
• An ATM skimming device was found at the Mobil gas station in Fairfield

Back in 2024, state officials launched an education campaign to help people learn the signs of skimmers and fraud, police investigations, and increased efforts by the Connecticut Food Association to train frontline staff in stores and place security tape over point-of sale devices to make skimmers easier to recognize.
