Jackson Cove Reopens For Swimming, Fishing

OXFORD, CT — Jackson Cove Beach reopened for swimming and fishing at 11 a.m. Friday after follow-up water-quality testing, Oxford Parks & Recreation announced.

The reopening ends a weeklong advisory that had prohibited swimming and fishing at the Lake Zoar recreation area on the recommendation of the Housatonic Valley Health District.

Officials did not release the new test results or specific readings in Friday’s announcement. The health district’s posted policies say public beaches can reopen after subsequent samples meet its water-quality criteria.

The closure followed a July 28 test that measured microcystin, a toxin associated with cyanobacteria or blue-green algae, at more than 21 parts per billion at Jackson Cove. A Lake Zoar Authority report lists 8 parts per billion as the advised recreational-water threshold.

Oxford Parks & Recreation said beachgoers can once again swim and fish at Jackson Cove.
