2 Charged With Forgery, ID Theft In Derby: Police

Police said two men were arrested in connection with an attempt to fraudulently open an account at a Derby bank.

DERBY, CT — Two men were arrested last week in connection with an attempt to fraudulently open an account at a Derby bank, according to the Derby Police Department.

In a news release posted to Facebook, police said officers were called to a Liberty Bank on Pershing Drive on Feb. 27 after an employee recognized David Yorwerth, 60, as a suspect from a prior fraudulent account attempt at a Liberty Bank branch in North Haven.

When officers arrived in the area, they detained Yorwerth and determined he was in possession of fraudulent and forged identification documents, police said.

Officers also identified Taylor Greene, 28, as a co-conspirator in the scheme after reviewing surveillance footage and additional electronic evidence, according to police.

Yorwerth was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, first-degree forgery and interfering with an officer.

Greene was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, third-degree identity theft and first-degree forgery.

The department commended the Liberty Bank staff "for their attentiveness and quick action, which prevented a potential financial loss," and noted businesses and residents are "encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly."

Police also noted the investigation remains active and anyone with additional information is asked to contact the department at 203-735-7811 (ext. 584).
