Simsbury Assessor Reminds Residents Of Tax Exemption, Filing Deadlines

SIMSBURY, CT — The Simsbury Assessor's Office is reminding residents and business owners about a series of approaching deadlines that could affect exemptions and assessments on the town's 2026 Grand List.

The deadlines apply to veterans, people who are totally disabled or blind, property owners seeking PA 490 classification, and people required to file personal property declarations.

Veterans

Veterans who have not filed their discharge paperwork with the Town Clerk must do so by Sept. 30 for the town to determine whether they qualify for an exemption on the 2026 Grand List.

Veterans who have received a disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs should also submit their VA disability letter to the Assessor's Office so officials can determine the applicable exemption.

Veterans who are rated 100% permanently and totally disabled by the VA must complete an additional application by Jan. 1, 2027, to receive the exemption on the 2026 Grand List. The application requires the veteran's July 2026 VA disability letter.

Veterans seeking an additional income-based veterans exemption must apply by Oct. 1 and provide 2025 income information.

Totally disabled and blind residents

Totally disabled residents who have not previously submitted their Social Security Administration award letter to the Assessor's Office must do so by Oct. 1 to qualify for an exemption on the 2026 Grand List.

People who are blind and have not previously filed their Certification of Blindness from the Connecticut Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind must also submit the document by Oct. 1.

Once those documents have been filed, the town said they do not need to be filed again.

PA 490

The application period for PA 490 classification runs from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. Applications and required supporting documents must be submitted to the Assessor's Office by Oct. 31 to be considered for the 2026 Grand List.

For property seeking a forestry designation, a state forester's report determining that the property qualifies as forest must be completed by Oct. 1. The PA 490 application must then be filed with the Assessor by Oct. 31.

Personal property declarations

People conducting any type of business in Simsbury as of Oct. 1 — including home-based businesses and remote employees — must file a 2026 Personal Property Declaration by Nov. 2.

The requirement also applies to farmers and owners of non-registered motor vehicles, vehicles registered outside Connecticut, and horses or ponies, according to the Assessor's Office.
