Charter Revision Commission Meeting March 30, 2026

A Charter Revision Commission is a temporary, independent body mandated to review a municipality’s foundational governing document.

Their mandate includes updating governing structures, improving efficiency and ensuring the charter reflect current community needs.

The Charter Revision Commission should not change their deliberations and votes in the draft charter to a political document serving the power-hungry elected officials.

The Draft Charter, as written, has inserted First to represent the First Selectman.

Trying to avoid gender identity the Draft Charter reflects First without any designation of the position.

This mind-set only is designated for the First Selectman, not the Board of Selectmen with both genders elected to the Board.

The position of First Selectman should remain.

This position should revert to the present Charter of First Selectman.

The Economic Development Commission should not be included in the Charter as it has become a political football and has not increased the Grand List over the years.

The Organizational Chart that is included in the budget has the Voters of the Town listed on top, the elected Boards and Commissions, the Town Manager and Town Departments.

There is no designation for the First Selectman, leaving one to think that this is a ceremonial position, without any authority.

Therefore, there should be no need to change the First Selectman position from a 2-year term to 4 years.

For clarity, I would like to have the Charter Revision Commission review my remarks and make the necessary changes in the Draft Report.
