Bad Art, Good Company

The Southbury Arts and Culture Alliance (SACA) is inviting residents of all ages to rediscover their creative side at Bad Art, Good Company, a fun, low-pressure community art event taking place on Saturday, July 25, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Southbury Parks and Recreation.

Designed for anyone who has ever thought they were "bad at art," the event celebrates creativity without judgment, perfectionism, or expectations. Participants are encouraged to experiment, play, and create alongside friends, family, and neighbors in a welcoming environment where messy masterpieces, unusual ideas, and plenty of glitter are all part of the experience.

"I think a lot of us have a moment where we decide we're not artistic enough and quietly stop creating," said Kelly Keenan, President of the Southbury Arts and Culture Alliance. "We're inviting the community to rediscover the simple joy of making something without judgment, expectations, or the need to get it perfect."

Studies have found that engaging in artistic activities can help lower anxiety and support mental well-being, while research from Drexel University suggests that just 45 minutes of making art can significantly reduce stress levels, regardless of a person's artistic ability.

"Bad Art, Good Company" is not an art class or competition. Instead, it is an opportunity to reconnect with creativity in a low-stakes and supportive environment. SACA will provide all materials, and local artists will be on hand to offer prompts, inspiration, and encouragement throughout the event. There will be a variety of games and fun, creative challenges as well.

The event is open to all ages and abilities. Families, friends, and individuals are all encouraged to attend. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for children. Proceeds will support SACA's community arts programming and help keep local creative opportunities accessible to everyone.
