Speed Camera Enforcement Begins On I-84 Work Zone in Southington

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Automated work zone speed enforcement equipment is now operating along Interstate 84 in Southington as part of a Connecticut Department of Transportation pilot program.

In a June 26 letter to Southington Town Council Chairman Paul Chaplinsky, the Connecticut Department of Transportation notified the town that its Automated Work Zone Speed Control (AWZSC) mobile equipment would be deployed on Route 84 beginning this week during various maintenance operations along the roadway.

According to CTDOT, the equipment is expected to remain in use for approximately two weeks, although the schedule could change because of weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.

The department said the system will issue warnings only during this deployment.

Drivers traveling 10 mph or more above the posted work zone speed limit may receive warnings, but no citations or monetary fines will be issued during this phase.

The automated speed enforcement equipment is being operated by CTDOT vendor Acusensus as part of the state's work zone safety initiative.

CTDOT asked town officials to share the information with municipal departments and commissions and encouraged posting the notice on the town's website.
