SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Staples-Party City pop-up store concept is coming to a main business district in Southington. Several of the once-mighty party supply stores have returned or are to return in Staples locations in a new format.

The offerings aren't as extensive as the old Party City stores, but the idea is to offer customers essential party planning items and event supplies in one place — under the Party City Banner inside several Staples locations.

Party City closed the majority of its corporate-owned stores by early 2025 as the company struggled financially and filed for bankruptcy.

Dozens of locations were shuttered in Connecticut.

New Amscan PC, LLC then acquired Party City’s intellectual property and wholesale business assets in early 2025 through a bankruptcy auction for approximately $20 million. New Amscan is affiliated with Ad Populum LLC, a pop-culture merchandise and costume company that now controls the Party City brand. Under the new ownership, the Party City logo is still alive online and through compact retail concepts, like the Staples pop-up stores.

There was no shortage of signs at the Vernon Staples store at the ultra-busy Tri-City Plaza. In all, three hung on the outside of Staples and another sandwich-board type was placed right at the entrance.

Balloons seem to be an emphasis.
