World Champs: Southington HS Color Guard Honored By School Board
The school's Winter Color Guard won the gold medal at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, last month.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington High School has always been a powerhouse football program.
But the Blue Knights are world champions in another competitive student activity, one that has only existed at the school for four years — color guard.
Earlier this month, the Southington Board of Education recognized the Southington High School Varsity Winter Color Guard after the team won a gold medal at the Winter Guard International World Championship Competition in Dayton, Ohio, last month.

During the last school board meeting at the John Weichsel Municipal Center, Southington Superintendent of Schools Steven Madancy read a letter from SHS band director Sarah Ossias announcing the championship victory.
The board then watched a recording of the team’s winning performance.

Board Chairperson Zaya Oshana praised the students and the program during the recognition ceremony.
“The education that comes out of programs like this outside of the classroom; it is immeasurable,” Oshana said.
He added that the Color Guard “represents the town fantastically and makes Southington proud.”
Oshana presented the team with a Certificate of Excellence on behalf of the board.
Color Guard Director Joey Gaudet told board members the trip marked the program’s first appearance at the world championships.
He described the experience as “a lifetime” opportunity for students and noted the program is only four years old.
“They are really proud to share this achievement with the Board,” Gaudet said. “They appreciate all the support and cannot wait to continue.”
The 2026 Winter Guard International World Championships were held April 9–11 in Dayton, Ohio, with final performances taking place at the University of Dayton Arena.
Southington High School competed in Scholastic A Class and earned the gold medal.
The Southington High School March Band & Winter Color Guard later thanked supporters in social media posts celebrating the achievement and the board’s recognition ceremony.
